It was also said that Hurricane Ophelia softened from Cat 2 to Cat 1 Hurricane on Sunday and it is now moving towards north-east across the Atlantic. The U.S National Hurricane Center has indicated that the hurricane now has a maximum 85 mph sustained winds on Sunday afternoon. It is expected that Hurricane Ophelia will be decreased significantly and it will become a traditional storm on Monday morning prior to hit land in southern Ireland. The Met Office forecaster in the U.K, Luke Miall has indicated that Ophelia might still has powerful hurricane force winds. On Sunday night, the Met Eireann weather service of Ireland issued a Red Status warning for the entire country.
Met Eireann said in a statement that southern and western parts in the country might experience gusts of up to 80 mph with heavy rain and storm destructions. The storm has been considered a significant weather event for Ireland and it might potentially cause heavy flooding and heavy amount of structural damages. The department also advised residents to take essential measures and stay up to date regarding the latest storm warnings. Entire school and colleges have been closed, court sittings have been postponed and authorities are on standby in Ireland, and monitoring the situation. The NHC also indicated that Hurricane Ophelia might bring up to 3 inches of rain in Scotland and western Ireland. Point to be noted that Monday is the 30th anniversary of the Great Storm of 1987, in which 20 people were killed in Britain.
