Apple has announced the next enormous jump for the Mac and Apple silicon, the M1 Ultra. The innovation features Ultra Fusion architecture which combines two M1 Max chips. It creates a system on chip or SoC with groundbreaking capabilities and effectiveness.

The new M1 Ultra provides extraordinary processing power to the new Mac Studio with sustainable per watt performance. It is important that the new chip contains 114 billion transistors, ever found in a chip for personal computers. The new chip can support up to 128GB with high-bandwidth and low-latency combined memory.

Powerful M1 Ultra Chip

Moreover, 32-core Neural Engine, 20-core CPU, and 64-core GPU can access the M1 Ultra. It provides remarkable performance for developers and artists working in a massive 3D environment. Professionals transforming video to ProRes can get up to 5x faster speed compared to the 28-core Afterburner of Mac Pro.

Two M1 Max Combinations for M1 Ultra

The senior vice president of Hardware Technology, Johny Srouji issued a statement. He said M1 Ultra is considered a big game-changer for Apple silicon. The new invention is a combination of two M1 Max chips with Ultra Fusion packaging architecture. The experts and professionals have scaled Apple silicon to remarkable new heights.

Srouji said the M1 Ultra has empowered the M1 lineup as becoming the most powerful chip in the world for personal computers. It consists of a massive amount of collective memory, a powerful CPU & GPU, and an extraordinary Neural Engine.

Ultra-Fusion Architecture

2 power-efficient M1 Max chips provide a foundation for an extremely powerful M1 Ultra. The custom-built packaging architecture of Ultra Fusion connects two M1 Max chips to create the most powerful M1 Ultra. The process uses a motherboard to scale performance by connecting 2 chips. It provides decreased latency, powerful bandwidth, and less power consumption.

It is noteworthy that Ultra Fusion uses Apple silicon to connect two M1 Max chips across around 10 thousand signals. The leading dual-chip connected technology provides a huge 2.5TB per second of low latency and inter-processor bandwidth. It efficiently gives up to 4x of bandwidth of powerful multi-chip interconnect technology.

Powerful, Efficient, and Remarkable Performance

The new M1 Ultra chip features an efficient 20-core CPU with 16 top-performance cores and 4 high-performance cores. The chip gives 91% higher multi-thread operation compared to the fast 16-core desktop PC chip with similar specs.

M1 Ultra can reach peak performance by consuming 100 fewer watts. The new chip features an efficient 64-core GPU, 8x bigger than M1 to provide faster performance. However, the currently available high-end PC GPU consumes 200 fewer watts of power.

Apple claims its collective memory architecture has been boosted with M1 Ultra. You can configure M1 Ultra with 128GB of combined memory and increased bandwidth to 800GB per second. It is stronger than currently available powerful 48GB PC graphics cards.

Neural Engine features 32-core runs around 22 trillion threads per second using machine learning tasks. The M1 Ultra provides remarkable ProRes video encoding and decoding operation with double capabilities for the media engine. Moreover, the Mac Studio of M1 Ultra can playback over 18 streams with 8K ProRes 422 video.

The Mac experience always offered deep integration between software and hardware. M1 Ultra efficiently integrates advanced Apple technologies such as the capability of multiple external displays with integrated Thunderbolt 4 controllers. It also provides top-class security with Apple’s new Secure Enclave, runtime anti-exploitation technology, and hardware-verified secured boot.
