Andrew Albert Christian Edward is a member of the British royal family and was born on February 19, 1960. He is the 3rd child and 2nd son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip (Duke of Edinburgh). Andrew served in the British Royal Navy as a helicopter pilot, instructor, and captain of a warship. He married Sarah Ferguson and was created Duke of York in 1986. They separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996. Andrew also served as the UK’s Special Representative for International Trade & Investment from 2001 to 2011.
Will Prince Andrew Give Up the Title?
Prince Andrew is experiencing months of pressure to give up his Duke of York title. An MP promised to follow various paths in parliament including an amendment in legislation to grab the honorary position of Andrew. The Labor MP, Rachael Maskell met with Commons officials to pressurize Prince Andrew to surrender his Duke of York title. It is due to his out-of-court settlement with a woman who alleged him sexually attacking her. Maskell is hopeful that Andrew will finish his connection with the city.
Last month, Maskell raised the issue regarding the Duke of York title in the Commons. On Wednesday, she said her mailbox was massively crowded with people stringent to remove Andrew’s Duke of York title. She said an online petition will MPs another way for a debate. The next step could involve a parliamentary petition to consider a massive public opinion.
Duke of York Title for Andrew Edward
Moreover, Queen awarded him the Duke of York title in 1986. She would take up the title in parliament by amending the legislation. She said it is essential to find the correct piece of legislation. Things are coming back to the Commons in the next few weeks. The move could extend the risks of deeper controversy into the platinum jubilee year of Queen. The event is expected to be celebrated in June during a 4-day bank holiday.
Last month, the Queen deforested military connections and royal shelters for Andrew. The royal family clearly decided to distance themselves from the allegations. However, the Queen awarded the Duke of York title to Andrew but she alone can’t remove the title of its own family member. It needs a significant amendment to the legislation. So, any action to remove the title needs parliament approval.
The Out-of-court Settlement
On Tuesday, a surprising out-of-court settlement was announced. It clearly indicates Prince Andrew didn’t submit any statement regarding the alleged blame. He had frequently denied the allegation weeks ago and affirmed to fight in a US civil trial. However, the elimination of the civil claim was found unsuccessful in relaxing the unrest in York regarding its connection to the besieged prince. Darryl Smalley is a Liberal Democrat councilor and the executive member for the culture & communities of the city council.
Smalley said the sexual attack accusations were a disgrace to the reputation of the city. It would increase pressure on MPs and for Prince Andrew to give up the Duke of York title. People need the royal household and parliament to keep in mind that this is a truly serious issue. This is a world-famous city with remarkable universities, excellent culture, and a much better environment. But the image of York across the world is undoubtedly degrading its reputation.
