Did Jeff Sessions offer his Resignation to Trump?

The New York Times has reported on Thursday that in the month of May 2017, the U.S President Donald Trump called Attorney General Jeff Sessions an “idiot” to his face and said he should resign. Sessions has been considered an advocate for hard-line policies on criminal justice and immigration. Finally, he stayed on in spite of the disgracing Oval Office session with Trump. The Times also reported that citing current and former officials in the U.S administration as well as others briefed. The Times also said that Trump criticized Sessions during a meeting on 17^th May 2017 with his top advisers to consider replacements for former FBI Director James Comey, who was fired by Trump earlier that month. The White House counsel Don McGahn received a call during the meeting from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

McGahn learned Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel for the investigation into potential coordination between associates of Trump and Russia to interrupt the U.S election 2016. The Times report indicated that Trump bumped out in response to the news. A source also informed CNN in the month of June 2017 that Sessions had offered to resign following a series of heated exchanges with the U.S President. The White House then refused to say that Trump had confidence in Sessions. On Thursday, the U.S Justice Department refused to comment on the story of Times. The Times also confirmed that Trump didn’t accept the resignation of Sessions due to he was advised that it might create more problems for him as he had already fired national security adviser Michael Flynn and FBI Director James Comey.
