On Tuesday, the U.S Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that the United States is very disappointed and worried due to economic and social situation affecting Venezuela. Tillerson also admired the help of Colombia in dealing with the humanitarian crisis. Tillerson said that the two men had a massive amount of exchange regarding how they and other countries could help Venezuela, especially through multilateral organizations like the Organization of American States. He was standing beside the President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos. He added that their major objective is to see Venezuela return to its constitution, return its duly elected assembly, to hold free and fair elections. Tillerson is on a 5-country Latin American tour.
The approval ratings are low to the President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro due to collapsing economy, runaway inflation and rising malnutrition in the oil-producing country. The country is looking re-election in a vote that should be conducted by the end of April 2018. Tillerson said that “We are all heartbroken due to the situation happening in Venezuela. It is such a great country and the people of Venezuela are also heartbroken to experience the impact on Colombia. Point to be noted that Venezuela has experienced a critical economic meltdown due to a plunge in oil prices. It left millions with barely any food and hundreds of thousands fleeing to Colombia, Chile and other neighboring countries. Santos said that at least 30 thousand citizens of Venezuela are crossing the border daily in order to buy food and other essential items.
