The office of the U.S Senator John McCain issued a statement that McCain has been admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He was hospitalized due to recovery from the side effects of next round of treatment for brain cancer. On Wednesday, McCain missed a 3rd straight day of Senate votes and he has been undergoing rounds of chemotherapy and radiation to treat glioblastoma (the terminal form of brain cancer diagnosed in July). The treatments for McCain has been undergoing since the start of September at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda (next to Walter Reed). 2 friends close to McCain requested anonymity to announce his condition. They said that there wasn’t any plan for the senator to resign. His office said in a statement that McCain will return to work as soon as possible.
Early next week, Republican leaders are expecting to conduct a vote on the sweeping tax-cut plan; it is currently under discussion in the House-Senate. The Senate version initially passed with 51 votes. The Republicans will not be able to bear a single additional defection or unavailability to pass the legislation if McCain missed the vote on final passage. 81 U.S Senators has been increasingly debilitated during the recent weeks from the side effects. His friends have indicated it as increasingly difficult rounds of treatment. At the beginning of November, he suffered an Achilles’ tendon tear that put him in a walking boot. He has used a wheelchair in the recent weeks to get to and from his office and floor of the Senate for a vote. U.S Senator McCain is now receiving treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center for normal side effects of his ongoing cancer therapy.
