Why Republican Congressman Justin Amash leaving the Party?
The Republican congressman Justin Amash is considered a frequent critic of the U.S President Donald Trump. He has called for the impeachment of Trump and announced that he is leaving the party. Amash wrote in the Washington Post, “Today, I am declaring my independence and leaving the Republican Party. No matter your circumstance, I’m asking you to join me in rejecting the partisan loyalties and rhetoric that divide and dehumanize us. I’m asking you to believe that we can do better than this 2-party system and to work toward it. If we continue to take America for granted, we will lose it”.
It is important that Amash didn’t mention Trump by name. He was the first Republican congressman to call for the president to be impeached. Trump tweeted and responded to Amash’s announcement, “Great news for the Republican Party as one of the dumbest and most disloyal men in the U.S Congress is quitting the Party. No Collusion, No Obstruction! Knew he couldn’t get the nomination to run again in the Great State of Michigan. Already being challenged for his seat. A total loser”!
It is noteworthy that Amash clashed with right-wing voters in his constituency in the month of May. He has also claimed he would not rule out challenging Trump as a third party candidate in the 2020 election. Amash is the son of Palestinian and Syrian immigrants. He has previously been denounced by the Republican Party following his calls for impeachment. He was first elected to Congress in 2010 and has maintained a strong fiscally conservative agenda and refused to back government spending on healthcare. Trump has formerly called Amash “A Total Lightweight who opposes me and some of our great Republican ideas and policies and a loser who sadly plays right into our opponent’s hands”!
